While conditions are somewhat shitty in the physical realm, I'd be willing to bet that more people are compelled to search for something more meaningful by their bad experiences than by some "improved" conditions some do-gooder may work to achieve for them.
Comfort is the most effective enemy of living consciously. When your life sucks, it's a lot easier to look deeper for meaning than when your life is nice.
And really, all we can do to make the world a better place is to make ourselves better people. That's where it really begins and ends.
I get what you're saying about blissed out people (regardless of their backstory). They're mostly useless, you might as well be talking to someone who's addicted to video games, or drugs, or whatever. Walking that fine line of being "in this world, but not of it" is tricky.
